The Optio is a Legionary who has distinguished themself through superior combat skill and is ready to train recruits.
¶ "Major Payne"
The Optio's primary duty is to train inexperienced recruits who have only just joined the Legion. Recruits differ: some are brave warriors who have left adventure and adventurism behind, while others are holding a sword for the first time.
¶ Beginning the Training
Before training recruits, you need to determine which kind of weapon each handles best. One recruit may be a skillful swordsman who strikes enemies at close range, while another may be an excellent archer with an accurate shot at long range. An experienced Optio must find an approach suited to each recruit so that every one of them can eventually become a true soldier.
¶ Theory
Every training course should begin with its theoretical component. The Optio must explain the full seriousness of the training, because the battlefield is clearly no place for jokes, and combat skills play a decisive role in the outcome of a battle against the enemy. The theoretical briefing may be conducted in any order; the important thing is for the recruits to understand all the information conveyed to them.
¶ Practice
The recruits have now completed the theoretical part of their training and proved that they are ready to proceed to the next part: practice. Practice may take the form of sparring, which helps recruits consolidate what they have learned, or a hunt for monsters that inhabit the surrounding area.
¶ Hard in Training, Easy in Battle
All the recruits have completed their training and can be considered full-fledged, valiant soldiers of the Legion, ready to rise to its defense. Sooner or later, the Legion will be attacked by its sworn enemies, the Rebels. The trained recruits must apply every skill gained during training to defend the Legion against this dangerous enemy.

Theory about the seriousness of service is followed by practical work in the form of sparring or hunting.
