Difficulty: Hard
Duties: Leading a mercenary squad.
Restrictions: The role's faction falls into the category of Combatant factions.
The Leader is an intelligent and experienced warrior who has assembled a group of loyal companions to handle all sorts of jobs.
The Mercenary Leader's responsibility knows no bounds. He must manage his squad, choose assignments, and carry them out. Anything can happen on these missions: one or all of his comrades may die, or the squad may find itself in a dire situation with no way out. It is the Leader who must overcome these trials and bring his squad to its well-earned reward.
As already mentioned, the Leader commands a squad of three people. They are all mercenaries and therefore expect their wages, acceptable working conditions, and so on. When the members share a special bond, however, these obligations may become secondary, making room for completing assignments.
Contract work is the squad's primary source of income, but it will not always be easy or humane. It may involve grueling labor to gather resources or expeditions into dangerous dungeons. Such work is, of course, richly rewarded and may yield new equipment, but the conditions leave much to be desired. One must not forget the danger posed by the region's wildlife either.
Under special circumstances—because of debt, compulsion, or a thirst for profit—the squad may join an army while remaining under the Leader's command. Such a journey may end in the army's victory or in the squad being lured from one side to the other by an offer of better pay. In this situation, everything rests on the Leader's shoulders.
Whatever adventures the squad faces, the Leader's decisions play a crucial role in securing a profitable outcome. His knowledge and strength can keep the squad alive and help it earn as much money and glory as possible. He must remain cool-headed and decisive, ensure the success of every sortie, and coordinate his squad while accepting full responsibility for failure. After a hard day's work, everyone can relax in a tavern and tell stories of the whole squad's exploits.
