Difficulty: Medium
Duties: Train recruits in the art of combat.
Restrictions: The role's faction falls into the category of Combatant factions.
The Varangian is an experienced and capable fighter who has survived more than one battle and is ready to train soldiers.
An army is not inexhaustible. One way or another, it needs new faces. The reasons can vary, from an ordinary discharge to health problems. Recruits who are ready to defend their ideals and country are therefore enlisted in the army. This is why the Varangian serves in the Rebel army: as a teacher and mentor for the new intake. Thanks to the Varangian, these subordinates will learn to handle weapons properly and fight in the name of freedom.
Learning theory is useful, but reinforcing it through practice is better. Stories of Rebel victories and combat theory are best supported by friendly duels with wooden swords and practicing strikes on training dummies. Tactical exercises are also worthwhile, but every such session is very tiring, so work should not outweigh rest.
Once satisfied that the soldiers are fully prepared, the Varangian can request their first assignment from the Jarl. It may be the capture of an easy point or a full-scale battle. The Varangian should not set the bar too high, however, because the subordinates may lack skill and agility, or their nerve may fail in the worst case.
After training every recruit, the Varangian can choose how to continue serving: remain a warrior in the army or manage equipment at the Camp. Continuing military service may promise valuable trophies and glory, but it can also end in death. Issuing equipment at the Camp will help replenish the fighters' supplies promptly. They will appreciate such speed and efficiency, and that may bring in good money and trophies.
