"You can escape from a guard. You can even flee the city. But there are only two ways out of a Legion cell: by order of the tribunal... or in a sack."
Deep beneath the fortress's stone vaults, in a damp and dark dungeon, you are the only person standing between the prisoners and freedom. The Legion Jailer is responsible for keeping every inmate securely confined, whether they are a captured spy, a military deserter, or a dangerous criminal. Any escape is your direct responsibility, and if a prisoner gets out, you face severe punishment up to and including execution.
Your eyes have grown accustomed to the dim torchlight, and your ears to the clink of chains and muffled footsteps. Here in the silence, any sound may herald an escape attempt. You must know every prisoner by name, along with their crimes and sentences, so that you can detect discrepancies or substitutions in time.
Every law has its shackles. Every city has its cell. And the Legion has its Jailer.
He is no hero, warrior, or commander. He is the silent witness to another person's fate, the final door between freedom and a cell. It is he who takes custody of a criminal after trial, confines them within stone walls, and counts every day, every ration, every glance toward the bars.
The office of Legion Jailer is not honorable, but it is sacred. He does not judge; he carries out the sentence. He neither hates nor sympathizes. His duty is to ensure that a cell remains a cell rather than a thoroughfare.
The Jailer does not live in luxury. His home is a maze of dark, grim corridors smelling of stone and rotten bread. Each time he awakens, the Jailer sees the same everyday scene: citizens who were once free sitting out their sentences. Either they quietly wait for their term to end, or their hour has not yet come, because the Tribune has not yet pronounced a verdict.
While the Tribune attends to his affairs, the Jailer has duties of his own: watching the prisoners. Fortunately, there is no need to feed them constantly because the soil where they are held is fertile, with crops and even a well for water. Driven by despair and boredom, the convicts may begin growing crops... or try to escape.
He should nevertheless be cautious and never leave his post, even for a minute. The moment he turns away, the prisoners may pick the prison doors' locks or break the doors down.
The Jailer is not merely a guard but also a judge in minor disputes between inmates, an investigator in matters of discipline, and an executioner when ordered by the Legate. In his hands are the keys to the cell and knowledge of its secrets: hidden locks, secret passages, and weak points in the bars.
There is no room for pity here. Even the most harmless prisoner may prove dangerous, and any display of weakness will become an invitation to revolt.
The dungeon forgives no mistakes, and the Jailer forgives no betrayal.
The Legion Jailer is a grim guardian of justice. Your steadfastness and resolve determine whether the dungeon remains a place of confinement or becomes a breeding ground for mutiny. Every day here is a trial, and you must be ready to face it head-on.
